The firm was established in Kyoho Era (1717), about 280 years ago. Ihei Watanabe, who came from Omi, present day Shiga Prefecture, established a shop called Omiya in the center of Kyoto at Teramachi and Nijo streets, dealing in tea, tea containers and ceramics.
The company Omiya dealt in high quality Uji tea and its reputation grew. About 160 years ago, in Koka era (1846), it received the name Ippodo from Prince Yamashina and from that time has only dealt in teas from Uji.

Kanbayashi family goes back to mid 1500 to Kamon Kanbayashi who moved to Uji, Kyoto, and started tea business. He was one of 2 official tea makers then. In Edo period, the family was responsible for many businesses relating to tea for Tokugawa family as a tea consultant. Kanbayashi is one of the most reputable tea suppliers from Uji, Kyoto.

Koyamaen also goes back to late 1600s’ during Genroku period in Japan. Kyujiroh Koyama started growing tea in Uji Ogura in Kyoto. The 4th generation started a tea store and the 8th generation, Genjiroh started marketing nationwide in Japan. They are one of the tea companies in Uji who also grow tea. They are well-known worldwide.

Potters from Ming Dynasty came to Ureshino bringing the ceramic culture and tea in 1504. Original tea was roasted using a kettle from Nangking. In mid 1600, Shinbei Yoshimura promoted tea growing in larger scale, and the Ureshino tea was exported by Dutch compay through Nagasaki Port shortly after to England, USA and Middle East.
